LESSON 1 - CLARITY

 

Hello and welcome to our 5 Day FREE TRAINING on how to get yourself video ready, be far more confident on stage and presenting, and feeling comfortable (if not excited!) to be in front of a camera. I'm so excited you're here!!!

Let's get straight into it. Watch the video for some great inspiration and stories that will help this all make sense, and then we'll work through the activity steps below. You don't learn unless you do, so don't skip any of the steps!

ACTION STEPS FOR DAY 1:

Grab a pen and paper and let’s get old school. I know it’s tempting to just listen and skip ahead, but honestly, if you want this to change, answer each question I’m about to ask you because it’ll also help you in the future exercises:

  • Summarise what do you do and how you help your customers.
  • What specifically makes people raving fans about your work or products?
  • WHAT are you known for in your industry, by people who know you and even those that don’t personally know you?
  • WHO do you help in your industry?
  • WHAT is their PAIN, and how do you SOLVE these problems for you?
  • Write down 5 examples of clients and their stories, that you have helped and turned their life around with your expertise, your services or your products?
  • What are your VALUES that you live by - which is kind of like your MORAL code.
  • Ask yourself WHY you do what you do and really connect to this.
  • And lastly, what is your everlasting LEGACY that you want to leave in your business and legacy. What really lights you up about what you do? Really focus on how you make people feel, and how you want to be remembered.

LESSON 2 - PREPARATION

Hello and welcome back! Let’s get straight into it because this is all about taking action and DOING! So hopefully you did the first step and are feeling pretty good about yourself and what you can do for people that have a specific problem and how you are the solution.

That is the very first step in curing your fear about presenting on camera, and working around your negative ‘it’s all about me’ mindset and flipping it to being more positive and focused on the people you serve.

So what I want you to do today is to spend your time writing a real life script for your video. Now plenty of people love the notion of winging it and I think this is where it all goes wrong for many. All of a sudden you go all weird and start to act like somebody else and it feels like really bad acting and you get right back into your weird mindset and it all goes to shit!!!

 

ACTION STEPS FOR DAY 2

So, the first steps you need to take when crafting your first video scripts are to:

  • Pick the pain point you’re going to speak around.

  • Start your script with stating that pain point and using the word “you” and asking a question. You want to make it personal and relevant to the viewer. It’s about them. Not you. So reach out to them in their language and show them you care about them.

  • State their problem, paint a picture of how it doesn’t need to be this way.

  • Tell one of your relevant stories so it really demonstrates your expertise and is relatable.

  • And then lead them down the path of how working with you offers them a solution to their pain.

  • And then close with a simple and uncomplicated call to action of how to get in touch.

SESSION 3 - PRACTISE

Hello and welcome back! So how did you go with your script writing yesterday? Be honest… did you get to it?! I know it’s a bit of a pain but this is seriously how you’re going to get better. ‘Winging it’ is great if you’re confident in front of the camera already and you’re really clear on what you want to say….

But, you’re here in these sessions because you want to be more confident so being well-prepared and practising your presentation is the first step to being better in your videos!!! So please do each step as it will really help you.

 

ACTION STEPS FOR SESSION 3

When you watch today’s video you will see what I mean. There is a massive difference in presentation style between session 3 and the first two, mainly because the first two were scripted and read from a teleprompter, whereas today is totally off the cuff with just a few notes... and it shows!!

You’ll see my style is more fast paced, it’s energised and fun and you definitely get to sense more of my personality, but I also bounce around from point to point and the time I saved in preparing the script I spent in editing instead when I started to ramble on too much!!!

It’s really up to you what style you want to go with. It also comes down to how your audience will best receive your content. For a polished, edgy video presentation, for me it’s having a script all the way. Whereas for a more friendly discussion/presentation that’s quite informal, where it’s okay for your true personality to come through, speaking from a couple of pre-prepared notes is great once you’re more comfortable.

I’d love your feedback on what YOU think! It’s all personal perception after all, and it’s impossible to have everybody like you so it’s best you just aim at delivering great content the best way you can to people that share your values, and connect with the people that dig your unique style.

So today is all about finding your brand voice and style, and PRACTISING. Tomorrow we talk about just doing it, a quick run down on equipment and lighting, and I’ll show you a different style that we call jump-cutting, where you speak from a script but you are fed the lines sentence by sentence. I love this style because you don’t need to set up a teleprompter and use it all the time with clients.

SESSION 4 - LET'S DO IT!

Ok, so get that camera out and make it happen. You’ve prepared for it, you’ve written the script, practised it, chosen the location, wearing something that you are comfortable in so you feel good, and you’re set to go!

Today I’m shooting outdoors to give you some variety - and that in itself has a few issues if you’re not confident! You have to deal with unpredictable noises, people and dogs walking past, harsh sunlight, and wind. I once even had a thunderstorm swoop in during an attempt to shoot the second take of a podcast, and that was directly after the cicadas took up residence on the first attempt. For take 3 I just had to do it indoors because of the deadline – but if you are still fearful at this stage, indoors is a bit easier because there is less that can distract you.

 

ACTION STEPS FOR SESSION 4

Today’s action step is to choose a style that you think suits you and to shoot your video! I’m using a little sony handheld camera on a small tripod with a rhode mic and fluffy wind protector on it. It’s professional grade and very transportable. You can use a DSLR camera with a teleprompter, your phone, or attempt my jump cut method that I’m using with type of camera. 

Try to speak down the barrel of the lens of the camera while presenting, I much prefer this method as it’s the best way to watch as the viewer. But if you’re really struggling doing this, pick something to focus on about 15 degrees to the side of the camera and speak to that – like you’re talking to another person. It’s less personal, but far less intimidating for our clients that are just not coping with making their first video. Even have a real person sit there and deliver the lines to you for you to repeat back. Whatever helps you get that first video out!

So set up that camera, take a deep centred breathe, say your “I am” mantra, focus on who you’re helping… and begin! Remember to smile, slow down with your pace and try to have fun, it will really show through in your videos and make the experience much more enjoyable!

SESSION 5 - CONGRATULATIONS!

Well here we are, 5 days go by in a quick flash and hopefully you've been able to fully focus on creating video and moving past your self limiting beliefs around using your voice and putting yourself at the front of your marketing through video and presenting!

I just have to pat you on the back right now because so many people don't take these steps, they just sink back into their comfort zones and don't push out to the other side where greatness lies.

 

ACTION STEPS FOR SESSION 5

So today is all about mastery. You've connected with your message, prepared what you need, practised and delivered. Now you just need to refine what you're doing and every video you create will become easier and better. 

My main message here is that we never strive for perfection. Perfection is just a distraction from actually getting S#!T done in your business. And it just sounds acceptable because it's dressed up as having high expectations when in reality, it's just a stalling tactic around getting the real work done and moving forward.
